Kuala Kangsar : Istana Kenangan, – A Palace of Memories and Malay Royal Heritage

When people talk about palaces in Malaysia, they often imagine modern domes and towering gates. But in the royal town of Kuala Kangsar, Istana Kenangan (The Palace of Memories) tells a different story — one that celebrates Malay tradition, architectural ingenuity, and royal legacy.

Built in 1926, Istana Kenangan was commissioned by Sultan Iskandar Shah, the 30th Sultan of Perak. While the grand Istana Iskandariah was still under construction, this wooden palace served as the Sultan’s temporary royal residence. Today, it stands proudly as one of the most unique historical buildings in Malaysia.

One of the most remarkable features of Istana Kenangan is that it was built entirely without nails. The structure was crafted using traditional Malay joinery techniques, relying on interlocking wooden joints and wooden pegs to hold it all together. It’s a true testament to the skill of Malay craftsmen, especially the talented Haji Suffian, the man behind its construction.
